Gmail Account Locked Due to Bandwidth? Here’s What to Do

While uncommon, you might encounter a temporary situation where Gmail locks your account due to bandwidth limitations.

This doesn’t usually happen because of SaneBox, but here’s how to navigate it:

The Fix:

Wait it out: The throttling typically clears within 24 hours.

Understanding the Issue:

Your account is hitting download limits, meaning the amount you can download from Gmail in a day is maxed out.

This limit works in “buckets.” As time passes, older usage expires, allowing new downloads. You might regain partial access within an hour, but it may take time for full access.

SaneBox isn’t the Culprit:

SaneBox uses minimal bandwidth because it only analyzes email headers (envelopes) and never the content itself. Plus, it only looks at each header once.

Possible Causes and Solutions:
  • Aggressive Email Clients:
    • Aggressive email programs like Apple Mail or Thunderbird can cause spikes during startup, sync, or initial configuration if you have a lot of emails. Consider adjusting your email client settings to be less aggressive. For example, have it avoid pre-downloading attachments unless you click on them.

  • Multiple Devices:
    • Check how many devices you have running an email app for the same account simultaneously. This can contribute to bandwidth usage.

Ruling Out SaneBox:
