On-Premise Exchange Servers and Microsoft Changes
This section explains how changes at Microsoft may or may not affect organizations using on-premise Exchange servers.
What does “on-premise” mean?
“On-premise” refers to a setup where a company hosts and manages its own Exchange server infrastructure. This gives them a high degree of control over their email environment.
How does this relate to Microsoft’s changes?
Because on-premise customers manage their own servers, they have the flexibility to configure their Exchange environment as needed. Generally, if an organization is not running one of the latest (or very recent previous) versions of Exchange Server, they are less likely to be immediately impacted by changes Microsoft makes to their cloud-based or newer Exchange offerings.
When might on-premise customers be affected?
The key factor is the version of Exchange Server the organization is running. If they plan to upgrade their on-premise Exchange servers in the future, the version they choose to upgrade to will determine whether they are affected by Microsoft’s changes. For example, if Microsoft makes changes that require a certain minimum version of Exchange, and the organization upgrades to an older version than that minimum, they will not be able to take advantage of the new features.
